The Open for Change event takes place in the Van Nelle Factory, a historic industrial building in the Dutch city of Rotterdam, built between 1925 and 1931. During the 20th century, it was used as a factory, processing coffee, tea and tobacco and later on additional chewing gum, cigarettes, instant pudding and rice. The factory was a new concept in its kind. When the project was commissioned in 1923, the building was to have all sorts of special facilities for employees, such as showers. Furthermore, the whole building was built above ground, so that it would be full of light, air and space. Currently it houses a wide variety of new media and design companies and is known as the Van Nelle Design Factory (“Van Nelle Ontwerpfabriek”). The Van Nelle Factory is a Dutch national monument and is on the list of sites under consideration for the status of UNESCO World Heritage Site.
